Two hundred years of extreme hostility and perseverance obliterated the British rule in India, which ultimately broke Mother India’s shackles of utter torment and grief. Long since then it has been over seventy years, the nation India is independent to the World. Sedentary in the 21st century, we often brood over the fact whether we actually are independent in its entire sense or not? It is quite natural to think so because of our surroundings, our mentality or the way how our life works. An outspread discussion regarding a few things shall enlighten us to not only think and remorse upon our fate but also, help us analyse the matter for an effectively positive outcome.
Firstly, independent India as we say consists of certain fundamental principles held within the Constitution which at the foremost position influence our very mode of living as well as our comportment. Quite naturally we are bound to certain do’s and don’ts in order to maintain our respective lifestyles. Taking the example of having basic land rights in the soil of our nation, if thought independently, right to own an acre of land is certainly unconstrained. But in reality, in order to possess an acre of land, we have to remunerate a definite sum of money in the name of land tax to the Government of India. This at the front generates the question of dependence within independence inside our minds. Out of the blue we start to think that owning a portion of land in the nation doesn’t hang onto our state of independence but to the fact, of how much money we possess in order to own a piece of land due to huge competition for survival of the fittest!
The subsequent thought of dependency within independence is majorly related to our individualistic approach towards reality and life. While growing up, when we step into our teenage years, physically we go through the stage of puberty but mentally we change to a great extent which depends mostly upon our surroundings as well as our upbringing. As the years pass by, we enter the realm of duality in our lives. Duality in character, duality in career and duality in nature. We get baffled in the beginning when we find out that our own parents provide us with all our necessities with one hand while taking a major portion of our freedom of having choices as well as opinions on the other hand. And thus we question independence. Specifically in the Indian society, teenagers and the ones in their 20’s are often seen to question their individualism and their individualistic existence as a whole. As a result of this, we lack in confidence of barging into any new kind of work in the future. We go through serious mental breakdowns while pondering over our independence. Maybe this happens due to the conventional orthodox upbringing of the Indian families or due to some other reason associated with leading human life. Ultimately in order to conclude, it may be said that the circumstances prevailing in the Indian society deeply condemns the situation of the teenagers, thereby directing them to question their independence at the earliest.
The third and most important point that leads to the thought of ‘independent yet dependent’ enormously associates with nihilism. The nihilistic approach towards life opens up a greater philosophical outreach in the minds of today’s youths. Frustrated out of life’s difficulties in the path towards achieving a happy-successful lifestyle, we often question our very existence. Stumbling upon dead rock ends while dealing with our surroundings we end up losing the essence held within life. We become so vulnerable that we question our independence as an individual human being. At times, several circumstances engulfing us lead to view our lives in a demotivated manner. Failure in career goals, lack of job satisfaction, unhealthy relationships are the very outcome of our demotivated spirit. The road en route towards having the feeling of independence in its true sense starts with the acceptance of the fact that “all living as well as non-living beings are closely dependent upon each other for survival.” Along with this it is to be kept in mind that “if no one heeds your call, then march on alone (Jodi tor daak shune keo na ashe, tobe ekla cholo re).” This is how life works as depicted by great many philosophers in the entire history of the Indian nation.
