EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT





What is Emotional Quotient :

The ability to recognise and understand individual’s own emotions and other people’s emotions so that discrimination between different emotions can be possible and would be recognised and termed accordingly is widely regarded as Emotional Intelligence (EI),or Emotional Quotient (EQ).It is also considered as Emotional Leadership (EL) or Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ) and even usage of emotional information monitors one’s own thought process and behaviour thereby adjusting emotions as per the adaptability to the environments or to reach aims and goals .


EARLY GROWTH :

In early 1930 psychologist Edward Thorndike highlighted the concept of “Social intelligence” which is the ability to get along with people and during the time period of 1940 psychologist David Wechsler showed effective elements of intelligence which could play a vivid role in one’s successful life .


History :

The term first appeared in 1964 ,in a paper termed as “The Communication of Emotional Meaning by Joel Robert Davitz though popularisation of this term came from the book “Emotional Intelligence”(1995) by Daniel Goleman though analysis by Goleman was severely critiqued by scientific communities though mention of this term is found in many papers and books by Michael Beldoch,introduction of traditional types of intelligence such as IQ which is a failure to recognise entire cognitive ability and thenotion of multiple intelligences involving interpersonal intelligence (the capability to recognise motivation,intentions ,wishes of others ) and Intrapersonal intelligence (capability to understand one’s own feelings ,motivations ,fears etc )by Howard Gardner in the book Frames of Mind:The Theory of Multiple Intelligences ,Apart from that “A Study of Emotion:Developing Emotional Intelligence”.a doctoral thesis by Wayne Payne in 1985though the first published usage of the terminology Emotional Quotient was found in an article by Keith Beasley in the British Mensa Magazine in 1987.



DEFINITION AND REDEFINITION:

The definition of Emotional Intelligence given by John Mayer was refined into four proposed abilities such as 1.perceiving ,2.using ,3.understanding and 4. managing emotions though these abilities are separate but yet they are related.Emotional Intelligence also engages with the fact that abilities to join intelligence ,empathy and emotions for enhancement of thinking and understanding of interpersonal dynamics .The three main model of Emotional Intelligence are

● A.ABILITY MODEL,( developed by Peter Salovey and John Mayer in 2004),

● B.MIXED MODEL (EI .Goleman Original Model ),

● C.TRAIT MODEL (Developed by Konstantinos V.Petrides )these ability models encourage thought and understanding even this is related to emotional reasoning and understanding in response to the environment and people with the circumstances and situations that they face in their everday scheduled lifetime.


UTILISATION:

Emotional Intelligence is a skill that one needs to acquire in order to increase their own wellbeing and empathy is highly associated with emotional quotient which facilitates to connect people with their personal experiences.


GENERAL IMPACTS :

According to different study reports it is observed that individuals possessing higher emotional Intelligence skills have more mental health, good job performance and leadership skills as general impact of acquiring emotional quotient consequences to better social relations for children and adults ,better familial and intimate relationships ,better academic achievement ,better social relations in work performance and negotiations ,better psychological wellbeing ,encourages self-compassion and individual are perceived more positively.

Possessing Emotional Intelligence can make one successful in life from every dimensions as it encourages to connect with others boost up performance ,better communication skills thus high function ability .Psychology practitioners already know the benefits of possessing Emotional Intelligence Development of Emotional Intelligence also helps in constructing Self-management and Relationship management and its proved that function able effectiveness is intertwined with emotional intelligence in work place even emotional intelligence has a greater impact in the field of business .Emotional intelligence facilitates in the growth and development of leadership skills and helps in assessing people in a better way in job sector and emotional intelligence has also greater impact in terms of decision making abilities. Emotional Quotient can be taught by parents ,teachers ,coaches ,educators ,practitioners and everyone can acquire emotional intelligence .
